Learn more about the science, technology and history behind kinesiology

You may or may not have heard of Kinesiology. Even for those of you who have, you may still have no idea what it is or how it works. So, here’s a little history lesson and some insight into the science and functionality of Kinesiology, and most importantly the extraordinary benefits it can impart on your life.

Those who want a 'brief' version here it is:

Kinesiology is a non-invasive methodology using muscle feedback and body awareness, that can help the individual to reduce stress and pain, improve performance in work, learning, sport etc, generate balance and harmony in life and relationships, and promote health and well-being.

Dr George Kinesiology

The origins of Kinesiology are held in Chiropractic where Applied Kinesiology (AK) came into being as a diagnostic system using muscle testing to augment normal examination procedures. In the early 1960s a Chiropractor, Dr George Goodheart, JRDC, founded and developed AK as a functional neurological evaluation as it relates to the structural, chemical and mental physiologic regulatory mechanisms.

Dr Goodheart and other members of the International College of Applied Kinesiology developed different procedures derived from a multitude of disciplines including chiropractic, acupuncture, osteopathy, medicine, biochemistry, etc.

Some years later Dr Bruce Dewe, a medical doctor who then trained in Applied Kinesiology, became interested in the ‘energy’ model of medicine and the effects of thoughts, emotions and spiritual aspirations on human function and structure. He began taking what he knew and moving away from the Newtonian model to the quantum model of physics and energy.

The Kinesiology Practioners Accreditation Board describe Kinesiology as follows:

"Kinesiology is defined primarily as the use of muscle testing to identify imbalances in the body’s structural, chemical, emotional or other energy, to establish the body’s priority healing needs, and to evaluate energy changes brought about by a broad spectrum of both manual and non-manual therapeutic procedures."

Kinesiology is individual to the client’s problems, issues, blocks and life experiences. Each individual is approach holistically addressing the three key elements, namely:

1. Physical / structural
2. Mental / emotional / spiritual
3. Biochemical (food, pollution, stress etc)

The focus is on finding and alleviating the causes behind the symptoms. Once the cause is identified through muscle testing, different processes are used to remove the related stresses and the body and mind are free to heal.

A Kinesiologist does this by using muscle testing which is a biofeedback mechanism to “read” what is going on within the individual as a whole. Thus, a Kinesiologist does not diagnose but communicates with the body/being to detect the priorities and needs for healing each individual.

Everything you have experienced through your entire life is stored in what is called cellular/muscle memory. Also stored with the experiences are the related emotions and stresses that occur simultaneously.

Muscle testing obtains a neurological response that leads to the source or trigger of the problem and in turn directs to the solutions to correct the ‘imbalances’ in the body.

That is the question you probably really want answered…
